Legally married same-sex spouses of Federal employees and annuitants are now qualified relatives eligible to apply for Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program coverage, regardless of their state of residency. This is one of the latest results from the Supreme Court of the United States’ ruling in June that a portion of the federal Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional. Newly eligible spouses of current employees and active members of the uniformed services have until August 26, 2013 to apply for coverage with abbreviated underwriting. After the August 26 deadline, the same-sex spouses of federal employees will be subject to full underwriting. Applicants may apply by 1-800-LTC-FEDS from 8:00am – 6:00pm EDT.
