The Lee County Sherriff’s Office is reporting that Hispanic families are being targeted in a phone scam. The male con artist, speaking in Spanish to his victim, makes contact and threatens harm to a family member is a ransom is not paid. In the cases reported, the caller did have personal information about the victim’s family members-pretty scary. The scammer then warns the victim not to call police because the victim’s phones are being monitored. Sherriff Mike Scott indicated that anyone who receives a call fitting the description of this scam should try to make contact with their family member who is allegedly in harm’s way and then contact authorities. The LCSO fraud line is 477-1242.
